Auteur Georg Friedrich HAENDEL (1685-1759)
Commentaire :
Compositeur anglais d'origine allemande (halle 23 février 1685, Londres 14 avril 1759). Son père est chirurgien et valet du prince de Saxe-Magdebourg ; à l'âge de soixante et un ans, il emmène sa seconde femme, Dorothéa Taust, fille du pasteur de Giebichenstein, près de Halle ; Haendel est le deuxième fils né de ce mariage. Durant son enfance, son père l'emmène à la cour de Saxe-Weissenfels, où il a l'occasion d'essayer l'orgue de la chapelle de la cour. Le duc, Johann Adolf, remarquant l'intérêt qu'il porte à la musique, conseille de l'envoyer à la Halle pour étudier l'orgue avec Friederich Wilhelm Zachau, organiste de la Liebfrauenkirche. Zachau lui enseigne le clavecin et l'orgue et lui donne les rudiments de composition. Haendel est bon élève et s'avère capable de remplacer Zachau comme organiste lorsque le besoin s'en fait sentir ; il compose des sonates en trio et des motets pour les services religieux du dimanche. Après la mort de son père en 1697, Haendel entre à l'Université de halle en 1702 et est nommé organiste de la Domkirche.(...) Haendel a légué la majeure partie de ses manuscrits à son secrétaire, john Christopher Smith, dont le fils les a ensuite donnés au Roi George III pour être finalement conservés à la King's Music Library ; ils comprennent 32 volumes d'opéras, vingt et un volumes d'oratorios, sept volumes d'odes et de sérénades, douze volumes de musique sacrée, onze volumes de cantates et cinq volumes de musique instrumentale.
