Auteur Giacomo PUCCINI (1858-1924)

Issu d'une famille de sept enfants, Puccini perd son père à l'âge de 5 ans. Sa mère l'envoie chez Carlo Angeloni, qui sera son professeur à l'Instituto Musicale Pacini. Rapidement, il excelle comme pianiste puis comme organiste, et se met à composer dès l'âge de dix-sept ans.En 1880, il obtient son diplôme, et poursuit ses études musicales au Conservatoire de Milan, aux côtés de Bazzini et Ponchielli.Quatre ans plus tard, son premier opéra Le Villi, est créé à Milan (sur un livret de Fontana). Ricordi lui commande alors un second opéra : Edgar, qui sera représenté en avril 1889, à la Scala de Milan. S'ensuivront Manon Lescaut (1893), et La Bohême (1896), qui connaîtront un vif succès, et créés tous deux à Turin. Viendront ensuite Tosca (Rome 1900) et Madame Butterfly (Milan 1904), sur des textes d'Illica et Giacosa.Il devient le maître de la scène lyrique italienne, rivalisant avec Verdi.Puccini va alors écrire un opéra " américain " : La Fanciulla Del West, monté au Metropolitan Opera de New-York en 1910. Et huit ans plus tard, cette même salle accueillera Le Triptyque (3 opéras en un acte), comportant : Il Tabarro, Suor Angelica et Gianni Schicchi. Turandot ne fut pas achevé par le compositeur, mais par F.Alfano, et donné à La Scala de Milan deux ans après son décès.
