Il combine rythmes et harmonies appartenant au jazz et au blues américains et un style plus classique qui s'apparente à celui des concertos pour piano du XXème siècle en Europe. On reconnaît la marque particulière de Gershwin dans le glissando de clarinette au début de Rhapsody bien que celui-ci ne provienne pas directement du compositeur. A l'origine, ce passage était conçu comme une série ascendante de 17 notes mais durant les répétitions, Ross Gorman, le clarinettiste de l'orchestre de Whiteman, le détourna par jeu et l'exécuta comme un glissando de jazz. Gershwin fut très impressionné par l'effet produit et l'a incorporé dans la partition.
