Ceci n'était pas la cas au milieu des années 1800, quand les Américains étaient poussés à l'esclavage. Cette pièce est un poème symphonique sur leur voyage vers l'évasion, de la tyrannie à la liberté. Le matériel thématique vient de quatre différentes sources : des spirituels afro-américains, des chants de ménéstrels européens, une chanson enfantine américaine, et un hymne religieux Quake. Cet endroit était à l'origine le territoire des Indiens de la tribu des Potawatomi. La ville, fondée en 1830, a connu une histoire mouvementée. Elle fut détruite à plus d'un tiers lors d'un énorme incendie le 9 octobre 1871. La ville est également célèbre à cause de la prohibition en 1920 lorsqu'elle devint le champ d'action de célèbres gangsters tels Al Capone et Bugs Moran. Au début de la pièce, le compositeur vous emmène à travers le passé glorieux de cette ville. La deuxième partie évoque la construction en formation de blocs de la ville, le fantastique panorama des grattes-ciel et les rues toutes droites qui s'étendent à perte de vue comme dans les grandes villes américaines. La troisième partie débute dans un ascenseur ultra rapide qui nous emmène au 96ème étage du bâtiment John Hancock où se trouve un bar fascinant appelé Signature room. Là, nous découvrons une vue magnifique de la ville et du lac Michigan. Le compositeur nous laisse amplement savourer ce panorama unique.
