Cette pièce a été jouée pour la première fois le 28 septembre 1745 : à cette occasion, elle a été donnée presque sans pause pendant quelques jours à Londres (au Drury Labe Theatre et au Covent Garden Theatre) pour célébrer la victoire sur les Jacobites écossais près de Preston. La mélodie majestueuse est devenue un symbole des dynasties souveraines. Les motifs de cet hymne apparaissent dans certaines œuvres musicales qui soulignent ou caractérisent un sentiment patriotique, comme par exemple l' Occasional Oratorio de Händel, la Victoire de Wellington de Beethoven ou le Prélude Solennel de Weber.
