Auteur Edward GREGSON (1945)
Commentaire :
CompositeurEdward Gregson was born in Sunderland, England. He studied composition at the Royal Academy of Music with Alan Bush from 1963-7, winning a number of important prizes, Gregqon is active in all areas of composition, but has been particularly acclaimed for his contributions to the wind and brass band repertoire, where he holds an international reputation. His Metamorphosis was chosen as'work of the month'by The Instrumentalist magazine and his Tuba Concerto has entered the standard repertoire, with over a hundred performances in the first ten years. Both are available in the Novello Wind Band and Wind Ensemble series. Gregson is currently Principal Lecturer at Goldsmiths College, University of London, and teaches composition at the Royal Academy of Music. He is highly regarded as a conductor of contemporary music and makes valuable contributions to several musical committees and panels, both in the United Kingdom and overseas. Originally written for Brass Band (and subsquently for orchestra and wind band), Tuba Concerto was commissioned by the Besses o'th'Barn Band, with funds provided by the Arts Council of Great Britain. It is dedicated to John Fletcher, who gave the first performance of the wind band versiion on June 1, 1984 at the Grieg Hall, Bergen, Norway, and the first British performance at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, on November 3, 1984. The concerto is in three movements, following the usual quick-slow-quick pattern : allegro deciso, Lento e mesto, allegro giocoso. The first is in a sonata form shell with two contrasting themes, the first rhythmic in character, the second lyrical. There is a reference made in the development section to the opening theme of Vaughan Williams's Tuba Concerto, but only in passing (...used by kind permission of Oxford University Press). The second movement unfolds a long cantabile melody for the soloist, which contrasts to a ritornello idea which is announced three times by the band. The last movement is in rondo form, alternating the main theme with two episodes. The first of these is a broad sweeping tune, the second is jazz-like in style. After a short cadenza, reference is made to the opening of the concerto, and the work ends with a triumphal flourish.
