POEME SYMPHONIQUERésumé : Un roulement de tambours, le son brillant des trompettes et de solides accords sonores... Le compositeur nous invite à assister à l'imposante ouverture d'une corrida. Le rythme et l'utilisation d'instruments de percussion sud-américains créent une atmosphère typiquement latino-américaine. L'aspect solennel de l'évènement est dépeint à grands traits avec des couleurs vives. Un appel des trompettes soutenues par des bois tranchants mènent le développement vers sa densité sonore maximale. Un passage tutti nous permet d'imaginer l'entrée triomphale du taureau dans l'arène sous les clameurs ferventes de la foule. La figure héroïque et déterminée du matador et celle intimement intègre et mélancolique de l'animal promis à la mort sont représentés par deux thèmes contrastés mis en opposition tout au long de la pièce. Le combat débute, et la foule salue la gestique époustouflante du matador. La lutte s'intensifie, l'animal s'affaiblit et se bat de toutes ses forces pour rester en vie. Mais son sort est scellé. La stridence des cuivres étouffée par le roulement d'un tambour aux accents funèbres annoncent les ordres de la présidence : le matador triomphe aux points, l'animal exténué doit être mis à mort. Le déroulement du combat défile sous nos yeux au ralenti, alors que le matador impitoyable porte le coup fatal (El golpe fatal) à son adversaire. Les spectateurs applaudissent lorsque le taureau vacillant finit par s'effondrer. Le matador célèbre son triomphe par un tour d'honneur au milieu d'un public très enthousiaste. Et tandis qu'il reçoit l'honneur d'une ovation, les mulillas (attelage de mules) élégamment harnachés emportent la masse inerte du taureau. Des accords puissants annoncent le final triomphant. Cela n'est qu'un spectacle... Une ultime note, douce et mélancolique, souligne toutefois la tristesse du dénouement de cette histoire.
