Son père , contrebassiste à l'orchestre de la Société Philharmonique de Hambourg et dans différentes brasseries de la ville , lui enseigne les rudiments musicaux.1843-52 : période de formation musicale : le jeune Brahms travaille d'abord le piano avec Otto Cossel , puis avec Edouard Marxsen qui lui enseigne aussi la composition .C'est alors qu'il compose ses premières oeuvres pour piano (sonates op.1 et 2 , scherzo op.4) ainsi que ses premiers Lieder.1850-53 : il rencontre le violoniste tzigane Remeyi avec lequel il fait en 1853 des tournées de concerts dans les villes du Nord de l'Allemagne . C'est ainsi qu'il fait la connaissance de Joachim , lequel le recommande à Liszt , qui l'envoie à Schumann : rencontre décisive (le 30 septembre 1853 ) car pour Schumann , Brahms est une révélation (Schumann écrira dans la Neue Zeitschrift für Musik un article élogieux qui décidera de la carriére de Brahms comme compositeur). A partir de ce moment ce dernier vouera à Clara Schumann une amitié amoureuse trés pure qui durera toute sa vie.1857-59 : Maître de chapelle du prince de Lippe à Detmold .1858-63 : Brahms se fixe de nouveau à Hambourg et compose pour le piano , la musique de chambre et pour la voix (Lieder et oeuvres chorales).1863 : se fixe à vienne où il est nommé directeur de la Singakademie .Désormais Brahms voyagera beaucoup à travers l'Europe soit pour écrire ses oeuvres , soit pour les faire connaître (il composera entre autres son Requiem allemand entre 1857 et 1868 ).1870 : il fait la connaissance du pianiste et chef d'orchestre Hans von Bülow qui allait bientôt se faire l'un des plus actifs propagandiste de son nouvel ami.1872-75 : il dirige les concerts de la Société des amis de la musique à Vienne.1877 : il est fait Doctor honoris causa de l'université de Cambridge.1879 : c'est l'université de Breslau qui , à son tour , lui accorde cette distinction.1896 : mort de Clara Schumann ; année douloureuse , car , de plus , Brahms est malade (il a un cancer du foie depuis 1891) et il admet enfin de faire une cure à Karlsbad . Il va composer ses dernières oeuvres : les quatre chants sérieux et les onze préludes de choral pour orgue.1897 : le 7 mars , il assiste à un dernier festival de ses oeuvres et meurt le 3 avril 1897.Brahms est et restera tout au long de sa carrière un homme et un artiste de l'Allemagne du nord : il incarnera l'âme germanique dans son état le plus pur et le plus total (il puisa dès la jeunesse aux sources littéraires les plus traditionnelles : poèmes , légendes , ballades du répertoire populaire ou savant). En ce qui concerne le renouvellement des moyens d'expression , Brahms a été un artisan du progrès : audace de l'écriture , hardiesse de langage modulant.Son esthétique au contraire appartient essentiellement au romantisme : c'est dans la confidence qu'il est le plus à son aise (Intermezzi , Klavierstücke , Lieder , musique de chambre...).
