Eldest of a family of doctors, Hector Berlioz practises the flute and the guitar. At the age of fourteen he starts to compose for chambermusic ensembles. In 1821 he goes to Paris to study medicine but he gives up his studies to devote himself to music. Registered at the conservatory of Paris at Le Sueur, he works with Reicha and Cherubini. In 1830 he obtains the Prix de Rome with "Sardanaple". In 1842 he starts a european tour on wich he promotes his music and his knowledge of orchestration of nearly 25 years. At the same time he is a musical reviewer of the"Gazette Musicale" and "Le Journal des Débats". He is member of the Institute.
Stammt aus einer Ärztefamilie. Hector Berlioz spielt zunächst Flöte und Gitarre. Er beginnt im Alter von vierzehn Jahren Kompositionen für Kammermusik.In 1821 begibt er sich nach Paris, um Medizin zu studieren, gibt aber seine Studien auf, um sich der Musik zu widmen. Eingetragen am Konservatorium von Paris arbeitet er mit Reicha und Cherubini. In 1830 erhält er den Preis von Rom mit "Sardanaple". In 1842 beginnt er eine europäische Tournee, wo er seine Musik und seine Wissenschaft der Orchestration während etwa 25 Jahren mitteilt. Parallel ist er Musikkritiker der "Gazette Musicale" und "Le Journal des Débats.
