Auteur Florent SCHMITT (1870-1958)
Commentaire :
»Florent Schmitt was born on September 28th 1870 in Blamont, a small village of the Meurthe and Moselle district. After studying for two years at the Nancy Conser- vatoire, he attended Théodore Dubois, Lavignac, Masse- net and Fauré's courses at the Paris Conservatoire. In 1900, by the time he was thirty the composer had fully mastered composition techniques, after having attempted the Prix de Rome four times and obtained it thanks to the votes of painters and sculptors. From his supposed stay in Rome, during which time he travelled a great deal but also worked, he managed to bring back a monumental work : the Psaume XLVII, is unique in French music of the XIXth and XXth centuries, with its powerful orchestration, including choirs, a solo soprano and an organ. In spirit, this piece is closer to Bruckner than to Wagner, Mahler or Strauss, and it created a sensation when it was first performed in 1906.In 1907 Schmitt composed the Tragédie de Salomé, a silent drama for orchestra. Several critics and musicologists find signs that announce Stravinsky's Rites of Spring in this complex and flamboyant work. It is during this period that he completed one of the most impressive monuments of French chamber music, the Quintette op. 51.When he joined the war in 1914, Schmitt could be considered as one of the most prolific and original composers of his generation. Having survived the war he also seemed to have survived his own creative capacities. He was caught up between Debussy's "impressionism" (however incorrect the term) on the one hand, and the mannerist and mundane tastes of the Groupe des Six on the other. Neither did he possess Stravinsky's capacity to adapt to new circumstances, nor did he live in a musical climate like that of Germany, where Richard Strauss' huge orchestral works were appreciated. He died in 1958; his last compositions consisted in a mass, and a Second Symphony, which was first performed by Charles Munch at the Strasbourg Festival on the 15th of June. The latter has not yet been accepted in the repertoire of great works.Emile Vuillermoz described the composer thus : “ Above everything else he is a robust creator, loving force and power... ”
