Bio: Paul Dukas, a French composer of classical music, was born in Paris and studied under Théodore Dubois and Ernest Guiraud at the Conservatoire, where he was a friend of Claude Debussy. He came near to winning the Prix de Rome, but when he left the Conservatoire found an early musical career as a critic and an orchestrator. His strong critical sense led him to destroy a number of his compositions and only to allow a relatively small number of works to be published. His first surviving work of note is the energetic Symphony (1896) which belongs to the tradition of Beethoven and César Franck. It was followed by another orchestral work, L'apprenti sorcier, better known under its English title The Sorcerer's Apprentice (1897), which is based on Goethe's poem "Der Zauberlehrling". This piece was used in the Walt Disney film Fantasia, which accounts for much of its fame. Dukas's rhythmic mastery and vivid orchestration are evident in both works. In the last decades of his life, Dukas became well known as a teacher of composition, with many famous students such as Joaquín Rodrigo and Olivier Messiaen. Seine erste bedeutende veröffentlichte Komposition ist die Symphonie (1896), die der Tradition Beethovens und César Francks angehört, gefolgt von einem weiteren orchestralem Stück, L'apprenti sorcier (1897), welches auf Goethe's Gedicht "Der Zauberlehrling" basiert. Dieses Stück wurde für den Walt Disney Film Fantasia benutzt, der weitgehend zu seiner Berühmtheit beigetragen hat. Dukas' rhythmisches Können und lebendige Orchestration ist in beiden Werken sichtbar. In den letzten Jahrzehnten seines Lebens wurde Dukas als Kompositionslehrer, mit vielen berühmten Studenten wie Joaquín Rodrigo und Olivier Messiaen bekannt. Er starb in Paris und ist auf dem Père Lachaise Friedhof beerdigt.
